London South Bank University brings digital skills training to Croydon

LSBU is proud to become part of Croydon’s digital ecosystem.

It’s official: London South Bank University (LSBU) is coming to Croydon, with courses starting in September 2021.

Electric House, a suave Art Deco building built in World War II to house Croydon’s Electric Department, has been chosen as the new home for LSBU-led student instruction, enterprise and community innovation activities. It’s located on the corner of Wellesley Road and Dingwall Avenue.

Founding and leading digital enterprise

LSBU started out as a polytechnic institute in 1892 and has almost 130 years of training leaders in professional crafts under its belt.

A century ago, this meant training young people in handling industrial era machinery, building textile mills, or architecting Art Deco buildings like Electric House.

Today, this means training young people in founding and leading digital enterprise, putting their creativity to use to make designs and campaigns, or putting skills and new technology to work to help protect our public health.

The original mission – “to promote the industrial skill, general knowledge, health, and wellbeing of young men and women” and to provide employers with a highly skilled workforce – has remained remarkably similar all these years.

LSBU takes pride in our leadership in equipping the community with the skills and mind-sets required to create value and improve lives.

LSBU was awarded ‘University of the Year’ for Graduate Employment two years in a row (The Times and The Sunday Times Good University Guide 2018, 2019) and was previously named ‘Entrepreneurial University of the Year’ in the Times Higher Education (THE) Awards.

From cryptocurrencies to coding classes

We think a hefty dose of pragmatism and results-oriented upskilling and training for the real world is coming to Croydon. We are especially excited about the significant increase in digital skills and digital enterprise-related offers from LSBU, as the university – led by LSBU Business School – is ramping up its profile as a leader in the digital innovation ecosystem.

We offer events and programmes on:

  • blockchain and cryptocurrencies
  • data analytics
  • artificial intelligence
  • Internet of Things
  • coding classes
  • hackathons
  • workshops on digital media creation

All these and more will soon be coming to Electric House, perfectly underlining the transition from electricity – the key technology of the previous era of industrial society – to information, the lifeblood of our digital era.

Community building

In these difficult times – in which UK cities, like cities the world over, are looking to regenerate and rebuild as they recover from the shock of the pandemic – we are committed to building community and social wealth, and we look forward to connecting with local entrepreneurs, SMEs, businesses and change makers alike.

First and foremost, we see ourselves as a hub and a building block in a web of business growth, innovation and knowledge exchange, so feel free to reach out to us with ideas on how to create synergies together.

We are excited to embark on this journey and look forward to contributing to the Croydon digital ecosystem.
