Boxpark deli owner launches app to help save restaurants everywhere

Croydon foodie serves up Help Local Street, a free service to help local businesses everywhere while they are closed due to Covid-19

The nation’s small businesses need us more than ever, as they struggle with loss of income during Covid-19. The hospitality industry, in particular, employs close to 2 million people – that’s a lot of jobs we need to support!

As the co-founder of Croydon Boxpark’s Wine&Deli, as well as the former Brgr&Beer in Matthew’s Yard, I could see that something needed to be done. I teamed up with 2 software developers to create Help Local Street – a brand new platform that allows small restaurant operators (and soon others) to promote their gift vouchers.

Locals (not just here in Croydon, but nationwide) can use Help Local Street to search for restaurants that they want to support and buy their gift cards – it’s that simple! With this one small act of kindness customers can help keep their favourites ticking over so they can enjoy them when the Covid-19 dust settles.

Software development on Help Local Street was done in Canada using predominantly Laravel and various applications, with me giving product direction (with my background in hospitality, it’s the ideal fit). It took us 2 weeks to build the whole thing. It’s portal based, meaning we can adjust functionality according to the market – this is how we’ve launched in both the UK and Canada so quickly.

The Help Local Street platform is a straightforward way to connect people with the local spots they enjoy. If these places don’t survive, we face the stale prospect of only having massive chains serving mediocre food.

Let’s pitch in and create amazing memories when they reopen.
